The kick-off meeting of SUNI-SEA project activities in one of our research sites, Batang District in Central Java Indonesia was attended by SUNISEA project officials and stakeholders from Batang districts. The stakeholders include Batang Health Departments officials, Primary Health Care (Puskesmas) officials, and community member, particularly the Posbindu cadres. The four key objective of this meeting were:

  1. Provide an overview of the SUNI SEA project to stakeholders of the Batang District Health Office, non-communicable disease programme holders, and Posbindu cadres.
  2. Get an overview of the Non-communicable disease prevalence and intervention in Batang District
  3. Understand the types of programmes and policies of the Batang District Health Office related to the control of Non-Communicable Diseases
  4. Understand the implementation of programmes and policies of the Batang District Health Office related to the control of Non-Communicable Diseases in the field, also at the level of Primary Health Care (Puskesmas) and Posbindu and their benefits to the community, as well as the obstacles encountered during the programme implementation

Kick-off meeting and focus group discussion were opened by Dr Hidayah Basbeth, Head of the Batang District Health Office and Mr. Heru Wibawanto, Secretary of the Batang District Health Office. The first session consisted of two presentations, an overview of SUNI-SEA activities and delivered by the Work Package 2 coordinator, Dr Ratih Puspita Febrinasari, and policy on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases through Posbindu and analysis of the situation of non-communicable diseases in Batang District delivered by the Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of the Batang District Health Office, Mr. Yuli Suryandaru. The session was moderated by Dr Heni Hastuti.

The second session continued with focus group discussions, where participants were divided into three groups, namely the Health Service Stakeholder group facilitated by Mr. Hary Agus Sanjoto; Posbindu cadre group facilitated by Dr Ratih Puspita Febrinasari, and groups of non-communicable disease program holders of Puskesmas facilitated by Dr Heni Hastuti. These focus group discussions discussed policies related to non-communicable diseases and the implementation, evaluation and monitoring of non-communicable diseases programmes, referral systems related to non-communicable diseases, as well as appropriate obstacles and inputs for the implementation of non-communicable diseases programmes.
